String Quintet «Rhapsody» (2000)
Part of the booklet-text: My one-movement String Quintet with the subtitle «Rhapsodie» is a slightly revised version of my Rhapsody for string orchestra of 1990. The slow introduction captures a quiet mood and contains the germ of all the thematic material used in the work. Elegiac motifs are integrated contrapuntally so as to evoke the meditative mood of yodelling; the motifs finally turn out to be melodic elements of a section which is dance-like and sometimes powerfully archaic in its rhythms. A brief lyrical epilogue ends the work. This work has been performed very frequently and has even found its way into the repertoire of certain amateur orchestras.
